The old saying is that “if you can hold water in your mouth” then you can be trusted to keep a secret. Back in the days when the spring was used daily to provide commoners with their fresh water supply, it was where everyone would meet. And you may be sure that the Toad who lived there heard all the gossip. The elders remember that, if you asked her a question, you could be sure of a true answer. Young’uns used to take their hoped-for partners to see the Toad and ask if they’d made a good choice. If the Toad disapproved - she would spit!
That was back in the days before the well, together with the Toad, was " inclosed ". Now, if you are quiet, on a spring day with the sun shining and a light breeze to carry the sound, you may be lucky to hear the Toad singing her lament and hoping that this year she may be set free.
